GOVERNOR PALIN FOR VICE PRESIDENT AND A BIT OF PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY AND A WOMEN'S PHONE BANK THIS WEDNESDAY (SEPTEMBER 3) - Insights from Donald Katz, Esq.

Alaska Governor Susan Palin is a great choice to run for Vice President with Senator John McCain. Consider the following:

The Dems, as part of the silly season, “criticize everything” mentality, claim that as a governor, Palin doesn't have the direct foreign policy experience needed to serve as president. In fact, four of our last five presidents (Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush 43) moved from governorships or former governorships to the presidency. (The one exception was the first George Bush, who, of course, moved up from the vice presidency.)

Each of these presidents, like the other four governors who were elected to the presidency during the last 100 years had very little, if any, direct foreign policy experience.

Obama, Biden and McCain are all US Senators. I would note that only one person in the last 100 years moved up directly from the US Senate to the presidency, and that was John F. Kennedy. Kennedy served in the US House of Representatives and US Senate for 14 years before being elected President.

Obama, who likes to compare his candidacy with that of John F. Kennedy, started officially running for President after serving, (I believe), just 143 DAYS in the US Senate. He became, what I call, a S.I.N.O. “a Senator in name only” who only came back to the senate to vote when it was politically necessary. He performed little if any other senatorial duties. For instance, even though he was appointed Chairman of a Foreign Relations sub-committee dealing with Afghanistan, he never held a meeting. So, he's had perhaps one year's experience vs. Kennedy's 14.

Governor Palin has more government executive experience than Senator McCain, Senator Obama and Senator Biden combined. (To be very clear, she is actually the only candidate with government executive experience.)

There are many other reasons, such as her expertise in the area of energy policy, her proven ability as a budget cutter and cutter of government waste, her actions - and not just talk - as a fighter for government ethics, etc., but I will leave the rest for another time.
